Blackout shades for rooms that need to be properly dark

A blackout shade uses an opaque fabric that stops light passing through it. Whether the room actually goes dark depends less on the fabric than on how the edges are handled — which is the part most companies skip and we do not.

The edges are the whole job

Every blackout fabric blocks light. That part is easy and every company sells it. The reason people are disappointed with blackout shades is the halo of light around the outside of the shade at six in the morning.

That gap exists because an inside-mounted shade must be slightly narrower than the opening to move at all. There are only three real fixes, and the right one depends on your window:

  • Outside mount — the shade is wider and taller than the opening and overlaps the wall. Simple, effective, and the cheapest genuine solution.
  • Side channels — aluminium tracks the shade runs inside. The most complete answer, and the one media rooms need.
  • Blackout with a fabric-wrapped valance — closes the gap at the top, where most of the light actually enters.

We look at the opening, the frame depth and where the sun hits, then tell you which one your room requires. If an inside mount will leave a bright line down the wall, we say so before you order, not after you complain.

Where blackout shades matter most

Bedrooms

Most people sleep better in a darker room, and Los Angeles mornings arrive early. If anyone in the house works nights, the difference between a room-darkening shade and a true blackout with channels is the difference between sleeping and not.

Nurseries

Nap time happens in daylight. This is the single most common reason we get called about blackout shades. For a child's room we will always recommend cordless or motorized — a hanging cord is a genuine hazard, not a formality.

Media rooms and offices

A projector needs darkness to hold contrast, and a monitor needs the window behind you controlled. Both usually justify side channels, and both usually justify motorization so the room changes state with one button.

Day and night on the same window

A blackout shade gives you a dark room and no view. If you want both, the answer is a dual roller: two shades on a single bracket, a solar fabric in front for daytime glare and a blackout behind it for night. We assemble those as one unit in the shop so the two shades sit square to each other and the valance covers both.

Common questions

Will a blackout shade make the room completely dark?
The fabric will. Light coming around the edges is a separate problem, and it is the reason most blackout shades disappoint. Solving it takes an outside mount or side channels — we will tell you which your window needs before you order.
What are side channels?
Thin aluminium tracks mounted on each side of the window that the shade runs inside, so light cannot pass at the edge. They are the difference between a dark room and a genuinely black one. Necessary for media rooms and for anyone who sleeps during the day.
Do blackout shades help with heat?
Yes, meaningfully. An opaque shade on west-facing glass cuts a large part of the afternoon heat load. It is not a substitute for good glass, but the room is noticeably cooler.
Can I get blackout and still see out sometimes?
Not from one shade. The usual answer is a dual roller — two shades on one bracket, a solar fabric for daytime and a blackout behind it for night. We build those as one assembly.
Are blackout shades good for nurseries?
They are the most common reason people call us. For a nursery we recommend cordless or motorized for safety, and an outside mount so the room actually goes dark at nap time.
